Season 2020 Review
After what has been a terrible year for just about everyone we look back at what has been a very different season. The year started with high hopes with some of our members even trying to get fit for the coming season with our own unique version of fat club and the committee continuing with their plans for improvements to the clubhouse, then unfortunately the pandemic hit and everything had to be put on hold while the country tried to get a handle on this new threat. Thanks to the hard work put in by the ECB, OCA and then by the cricket clubs themselves to put in precautionary measures to help protect everybody involved from spreading or catching the virus a reduced season was able to be started with the OCA offering smaller more localised divisions with finals being held between the divisions at the end of the season giving it a competitive cup feel.
Westcott first team did very well in this new format missing out on topping their division only by having a lower Runs/wicket score than Oxenford having finished on the same amount of points winning five of their seven games with two no results due to abandoned games( Congratulations to Captain Strongy and the team for such a strong showing). With the uncertainty around availability due to the pandemic the decision was made by the committee not to enter the second team into the league organised by the OCA and to just play a number of Sunday friendlies throughout the shortened season allowing them to play some different opposition and visit some new grounds that made a nice change (Our Thanks to Lewis Jeacock for all his hard work organising these fixtures), the seconds managed to get a fairly even split of results with new recruits Charlie Seaton-Reid & Ivan Fernando performing well in their maiden season with the club. All in all it was good to just get some cricket in what has been a difficult year all round.
The Year is now coming to the end with the exciting news that the OCA members have voted in favour of accepting the invitation from the Cherwell cricket league to join en-masse to create one larger league allowing for more localised divisions at the lower end of the league and the chance for more progression at the top end, we look forward to this exciting challenge in the 2021 season(hopefully) with again the chance to play some new teams travelling to different grounds & also some old friends from the OCA, The First team has been placed in Division 4A ( Division 4A List Here) and the second team has been placed in Division 7A (Division 7A list Here) we will update the website with more information on this as and when the Cherwell league releases it.
The year also ends as it began with the committee and volunteers working tirelessly to make improvements within the club and specifically the pavilion and our thanks must go to these people that give up their time to make this club a great place to play your cricket the club simply would not exist without them. The last but by no means least exciting news is that the club will be embarking on its first tour in many a year in May 2021 to Torquay ( Covid dependant) our Thanks to Finbar & Will for all their work to make this happen.
From all at Westcott CC Please stay safe and we will see you in 2021
