21st July 2018 vs Wolvercote (away) won by 3 wickets.
After the previous evenings rain Westcott arrived at Wolvercote in warm but muggy conditions to find a green top wicket. With some moisture still in the track and in the air the skipper having won the toss duly elected to field. Rehman & Tanveer opened up the bowling and an early LBW followed by a low catch by the keeper restricted Wolvercote to a slow but steady start with runs being hard to come by. Further wickets were difficult to attain, but with the score on 90 for 2 after 30 overs Westcott felt they were in the better position. Alimar and Mark both bowled tidy and frugal spells but still no further wickets were to be had. Wolvercote had to start hitting out eventually if they were to reach a respectable total and Rehman (below) took the opportunity to grab four further wickets to end with a well deserved 5-31. Wolvercote closed their innings on 167-6 which seemed a tad under par irrespective of the conditions.Post tea the sun kindly came out and in pleasant conditions Rehman and Tony strode out to the middle to set about the Wolvercote total, putting on a quick fire 43 for the first wicket in 6 overs. the top order all chipped in with various 20’s and 30’s but no one managed to stay in to guide the innings through. 110-5 became 117-7 and the game was probably now in Wolvercote’s favour with 50 required with only three wickets remaining. Wolvercote sensed they were back in the game and the game became very tense. However the composure of Ian Headley (below (30no) ) and Nick Solway (18no) proved to be the decisive factor as they played extremely sensibly for the next ten overs putting on a 50+ partnership to guide Westcott towards the finish line, with Ian smashing the ball through cover with 4 balls of the match to go to win a close game for Westcott.
Onwards and upwards with the visit of table topping Witney swifts next week.
