Captains match report Westcott vs Oxenford 9th June, win by 9 wickets.
Well where to start, no skipper, no vice skipper, 2 new players and facing the team second in the league. winning the toss was a good beginning and Oxenford were put into bat, The opening pair of Tanveer & Rehman along with some good ground fielding kept the run-rate down, this was then backed up by the bowling of Baughan & kahn. The scoreboard did keep ticking along though and it was only after the introduction of Ian Headley (one of our recent acquisitions from Fringford) that we started to take wickets, all in all Ian opened his account with 3 wickets, there were 2 run-outs and Tony Burcham took a terrific catch in the final over to ensure we took 6 wickets with Oxenford having 220 runs on the board, a total that always looked achievable providing we had a good start.Tony and Rehman ( above) opened the innings and provided perfect foils for each other Reh slapping it everywhere and Tony the anchoring defensive stability. Reh departed but only after he had reached 53 with the score on 64, no further wickets were lost as Alimar (below) and Tony compiled the run chase that saw us win with 6 overs to spare. Ali batted with his usual swagger but actually only offered two chances and the hitting towards the end of the innings was sweeter than how Reh batted earlier. Tony didn’t offer any chances that i can remember and if we had told him he would have been in the field the whole game in his first game for Westcott i’m not sure he would have signed on. But all the credit does go to Ali who not only batted beautifully but also scored his maiden century for the club, it has been a long time coming but was worth it in the end. I do hope this is only the beginning and there are more to come.
Great team performance and 28 points in the bag.The 1st’s continue their season at home to Wooton & Boars hill this Saturday 16th June.
