Welcome to the August edition of the Club update. Firstly, congratulations to both Mark Strong and Waqas Ur-Rehman for being selected to represent the Cherwell League in the Tier 4-6 rep game against the Thames Valley Cricket League on Wednesday 18th August. The game was won comfortably by the Cherwell team, with our very own Waqas Ur-Rehman taking 3 wickets for 30 runs from 9 overs, so well bowled Waqas. Looks like the team skipper Strongy hid himself quietly away, avoiding both batting and bowling duties, obviously saving himself for more important matters at the weekend 😉

Not long to go now until the end of the season (only three weeks) and it has been decided that the presentation evening will be held at the clubhouse after the final game of the season on Saturday 4th September. The 2nd XI will be playing at home that day against Dinton CC, with the 1st XI away at Horspath CC, but with an earlier start time of 12pm, should be back early enough to get stuck into what should be a great evening. To keep the catering options simple, food, for those requiring it, will be provided by the infamous “fish and chip” van during the evening. Presentations of trophies will be carried out by our illustrious chairman and the Committee look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in attendance, including our regular friends who frequent the Club weekly.

1st XI – With three games to go, the 1st XI are currently sitting in third position in the league, with a big game against Oxenford next week coming up. Promotion to Division 3 is still possible, but may rely on other results going in our favour. Nevertheless, a great effort by skipper Strongy and his team so far and we wish the team all the very best in their final push for promotion.

2nd XI – Not quite so fortuitous for the 2nd XI, who currently sit near the foot of the table in Division 7a, in what has been a challenging season, but full credit to Lewis Jeacock for his tremendous effort to get a team out week after week, battling with non availability issues  through holiday periods, injuries, Covid self-isolation and stag do’s (congratulations by the way Tom and best wishes for your  forthcoming wedding). A final push may see the team stave off relegation and realign to go again next season. Fingers crossed.!!

Midweek XI – Another difficult season, this time for the Midweek XI, who held their heads high in an extremely competitive league, but it has been great to see lots of new faces playing and the bar takings are definitely up by a large percentage, so thanks to all who participated throughout the season.

The vice captain Tony would like to send his heartfelt thanks to all those who have donated to the ABF Soldiers Charity thus far in support of his skydive on Wednesday 26th August, but will add a shameless plug here for anyone else wishing to part with their hard earnt money, so please feel free to follow this Justgiving link to make a donation to this very worthy charity.

Don’t forget to check out the Bonus Ball and 120 Club tabs at the top of the page to see if you are a recent winner..! It could be you !!

That’s about it for now and the Committee very much look forward to seeing everyone for the presentation evening on Saturday 4th September. Please do make the effort to come along, even if you aren’t playing that day and let’s make it a great night 🙂
