Well, what a terrible week of weather we have had. Nothing but rain, rain and yet more rain. Extremely frustrating for the players, but also for the head groundsman. Nevertheless, some cricket has been played this week, with the Midweek XI away at Aylesbury Town CC on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, Westcott CC had the worse of the conditions that evening (it rained) and lost by 35 runs. Notable performances however by new comer Roy Peterkin, taking three excellent catches and showing that he can certainly hit a cricket ball hard. Lakmal also showed some great promise, bowling some lovely away swing, taking a couple of wickets and then delivering some solid batting at the back end of the Westcott innings alongside Manik. Dave Hawes also picked up a couple of wickets with his tricky left arm bowling, but overall one decent innings from the Aylesbury skipper was the difference between the two teams. Next fixture is at home on Tuesday 18th May against Monks Risborough CC, so if you are available and fancy a game, please let Tiz know on the Whatsapp group soonest.
So, on to Saturday and the forecast did not look good at all (again). Many thanks to those involved in spending time preparing the ground, but for the second week running, the 1st XI fixture was called off. This time though, the players did arrive in hope that the weather gods would be kinder to us, but alas, by 3pm, the decision was made to to abandon the game without a ball being bowled. Thanks also to umpires Derek Thatcher & Tim Anning for enduring with us for so long in trying to get the game on. Always nice to see them.
A different story at Chalgrove however, where the 2nd XI managed to get a full game in. Unfortunately though, the result did not swing in Westcott’s favour. I await a match report for this game (hint), but looks like Gary Ellis scored a useful 30 runs, with brother Shane bagging a couple of wickets, but the Westcott total was not enough to stop the home team running in a victory by 6 wickets.
