Welcome to the July edition of the Club Update 2021..

We are just over half way into the season now, although the summer weather seems to have evaded us so far. There has still been plenty of activity at the Club though, with Saturday, Sunday and midweek fixtures all being played and of course, a rather important football tournament being shown on the TV.. it’s coming home..!!

Team updates – Mixed fortunes so far for Westcott CC teams competing this season. The midweek team has found it difficult in an extremely competitive league, but have held their heads high and continued to show great effort and commitment as a team. Final midweek home game is to be played on Tuesday 13th July and the skipper has kindly volunteered to get the beers in after the game, so make sure you are there to capitalise on his generosity..!!

The 2nd XI are proving to be competitive in Division 7a in what is becoming a tightly congested mid table battle for places. Mindful that potentially three teams could be relegated from the division, the 2nd XI need to keep pushing hard, so your continued availability during the holiday period will be key to Lewis being able to put out a strong team over the next few weeks.  A good run of form might even offer an opportunist glimpse for a late push for promotion..!?!  From a stats perspective, the leading run scorer for the team at the moment is Giles Burkitt with 191 runs, whilst Gary Ellis and Lewis Jeacock both have 9 wickets each in the bowling department.

The 1st XI are also proving to be competitive in Division 4a and are currently top of the division, remaining unbeaten since the loss in the first game of the season. An important victory over Oxenford CC and two recent winning draws against Horspath CC and Bletchely Town CC has kept the pressure on at the top, leaving Westcott CC in a strong position as we move into the second half of the season. A continued effort is still required though and we must not rest on our laurels, but remain focussed and disciplined if we wish to push forward and mount a serious challenge for promotion to Division 3. So far though, I feel that we are learning and adapting quickly to the differing playing formats in the Cherwell League and a strong team ethos has allowed us to push forward as a group, which is very pleasing.

Tanveer Hussain is leading the way with the bat, having scored over 300 runs already this season, closely followed by Stuart Symes with 200 runs. Bowling wise, Waqas has taken 20 wickets, Alimar Khan has 14 and the skipper Strongy has cleverly brought himself on at the right time to grab 12 as well..!! Interestingly, the skipper is leading both the batting and bowling averages at the moment, so it is your responsibility as batsmen and bowlers to ensure that the skipper doesn’t manage a clean sweep of the trophies at the end of the season!!

T20 Charity Match – A big thank you to all those that supported the T20 Charity Match held up at Brill CC on Sunday 27th June. A great fun day, with £646 being raised for Maggies – everyone’s home of cancer care. Well done to Dale getting the team together (never easy on a Sunday) and thanks to Brill Cricket Club for hosting and organising.

COVID-19 update – We wait with bated breath for the Prime Minister to announce the potential “Freedom Day” from national lockdown restrictions as of 19th July. For your safety and welfare, the Club will ensure that any new regulations will be managed accordingly, ensuring continued compliance within an ever changing environment. Hopefully, the easing of lockdown and social distancing will make activities a lot easier to manage for players, spectators and visitors alike, as we continue the transition back to “normal” life.

Committee – The Committee continues to work hard in the background for all Club members. The Clubhouse facilities are continually improving, with the new showers looking clean and refreshed, the bar area is really taking shape now and the pavilion lawn and ground itself looks a picture, so thanks must go to all those who put in their time and effort for the good and benefit of the Club. I know a few of you have asked about the intention for the end of season presentation and dinner night, and I believe this will be discussed by the Committee at the next meeting, who will then inform everyone of the plan once agreed.

Club Merchandise – Great also to see Club members buying their “merch” from Trysports in Bicester. Please note that the prices on the Westcott CC Trysports Club Page already has a discounted price allocated.

Happy birthday – The Club would like to wish the Club President, Mr Tim Schneider, a very happy 90th birthday for last weekend and hope that he had a thoroughly enjoyable day. “Happy birthday to you Sir…” 🍾🎂

And that is about it for now.. good luck to all the teams until the end of the season and let’s continue to push forward, both as players and as a Club.
